On 10 June 2024 the UN Security Council adopted its resolution 2735 (2024) calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and setting out a future for Gaza. All members voted for this American proposal, with the exception of the Russian representative who abstained (and did not veto). The resolution has the force of international law.
The resolution is reported by the United Nations press office HERE, including statements made by council members when voting. The actual text of the resolution can be downloaded from HERE.
The resolution has been completely ignored by Israel and it is hard to improve on this statement at the Security Council on 13 August 2024 by South African Deputy Ambassador Marthinus van Schalkwyk: “Unfortunately, some in this room [ie on the Security Council] continue to support and defend Israel as it commits the most despicable crimes against humanity the world has ever seen in recent times, with impunity… Israel’s impunity and apparent political protection is not perceived. It’s real. This impunity puts to into question the whole meaning of ‘legally binding’, because this organisation has adopted numerous resolutions since the formation of the United Nations that have been undermined by Israel for decades. To affirm its status as a legal delinquent, immediately following its receipt of armed support from those who support it, Israel committed yet another massacre on 10 August this year when it bombed the Al Tabee’in School in Central Gaza City, where thousands of displaced families had sheltered.”
