Voices from the Churches

A Call for Repentance is issued by Kairos Palestine and other church bodies, you can read it HERE. “Finally, and we say it with a broken heart, we hold western church leaders and theologians who rally behind Israel’s wars accountable for their theological and political complicity in the Israeli crimes against the Palestinians, which have been committed over the last 75 years.”

The Archbishop of Canterbury issued THIS STATEMENT on 2 August 2024 following the opinion of the International Court of Justice. A further statement from him on 11 September 2024 is HERE.

The Anglican bishop of Liverpool, Rt Rev John Perumbalath, sent us this statement, which was read at our rally on 19 May 2024:

“I join with millions of concerned citizens all around the world in calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The relentless bombardment of Gaza cannot be morally justified; nor can it be seen acceptable in the light of international law. No nation should be able to kill thousands of innocent civilians, mostly children and women, in the name of self-defence. This war seems to consolidate a system of occupation that has for too long denied Palestinians their rights and freedoms. Palestinians need to have access to food, water, healthcare, and safety. Other nations in the world, especially the leading powers in the West, need to act swiftly to end this war. They need to stop arming Israel while it carries on this inhuman violent assault on the people in Gaza, and work towards a lasting solution to the conflict in the region by establishing a sovereign state of Palestine. I offer my prayers for those who suffer in this conflict and for all those who are in solidarity with them. It will be one of the greatest moral failures of the humanity in this century if we just remain silent onlookers.”

A statement on 1 August 2024 from the Presiding Bishop of the Church of Norway, together with a professor in Bethlehem, can be found HERE; We stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people in general and the Christian community in Gaza, in particular the ones seeking refuge in Gaza churches amid shelling, including recent attacks on the St Porphyros Orthodox Church in Gaza (July 30). We support Palestinian Christians in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Israel, who face constant persecution and insecurity.

The Liverpool Catholic Justice and Peace Commission issued this statement on 20 December 2023: “The events on 7th October have caused immense suffering to the people of Israel, and the subsequent and continuing attempts to defeat Hamas are causing extreme suffering to the people of Gaza. Bearing in mind the pain of both populations, we call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. It is estimated that 18,000 Palestinians have been killed in the recent conflict including thousands of children, in what the UN have described as ‘a graveyard for children.’ In addition the people of Gaza are suffering displacement from their homes with estimates that in southern Gaza, Rafah, with a population of 280,000 is now hosting well over a million people. An escalation in fighting will not resolve the root causes of this relentless cycle of violence but only sow seeds of greater hatred and animosity.”
